Optimizing Data Integration
Traditional full table copies (Full Load) become inefficient when a database grows to millions of records. Instead of a daily ETL process that overloads the system, it is worth implementing Change Data Capture (CDC)—a mechanism that captures only inserts, updates, and deletes.
Choosing a Change Capture Method
As of July 2017, an effective tool for PostgreSQL 9.6 is logical decoding of WAL transaction logs. This allows for retrieving changes without scanning the entire table. When using replication slots, it is important to monitor WAL size to prevent disk overflow due to consumer lag. For Microsoft SQL Server 2016, it is advisable to use built-in CDC procedures based on system logs, which allow for tracking physical deletions via LSN positions. It is important to remember that CDC is merely a technical tool for acquiring changes; business rules and Data Quality verification remain the responsibility of the integration platform and MDM systems.
